Before the Birth
...
1. Get Informed. You'll need more than a web site or
a couple of books to prepare yourself for breastfeeding. Try to attend
at least one class on the subject of lactation amd nursing. Babies
who latch well, nurse well. Learn all you can about latching
on!
2. Line Up Support. Having family, friends, and/or
trained breastfeeding consultants will make the first few weeks easier.
What to do at the Birth ...
1. Non-Medicated Birth (if possible). Medication can
cause your baby to be drowsy and disinterested in nursing.
2. Nurse as Soon as Possible. Most newborns can nurse
within minutes of birth. The sooner you nurse, most likely the better
your breast feeding relationship will be. Remember the first food your
baby gets is colostrum, and not yet your milk. Colustrum is like a very
watered-down syrup - but it's all baby needs until your milk comes in.
